Why Internationalisation/Global Learning in Education?

What is internationalisation/Global Learning?

Internationalisation means that students have contact with other cultures from a respectful, curious and positive attitude. By doing this they broaden their horizon and show us that they don’t only act on ideas they are familiar with and what is common within their national limits. They can meet the people they have contact with in person or virtually.  The Internet offers a wide range of options. Students share knowledge through technology. Internationalisation happens from within their own group and it always has a directed purpose.  Internationalisation is global learning.

Why internationalisation/Global Learning?

The fast changing international world will make demands from the young people we educate. Due to fast Internet connections, increasing international contacts and the flexibility of the job market, globalization is hard to keep up with. The transfer of knowledge and educating pupils for a school diploma are not solely enough to prepare them for the future, other things are important too. Besides a good knowledge of the foreign languages, ICT-techniques and practical skills they also have to develop themselves into independent personalities. Knowledge of the cultural diversity and insight in the international relations are vital when it comes to functioning well as citizens in the new global world. Internationalisation plays a large role in this process. The field of education wants to anticipate the skills of the future and provide educational policy plans that facilitate their development.

There is a second reason why internationalisation plays an important role. Education will change drastically during the coming years. Our students will be expected to work more independently and learn how to take initiatives. In the new structure a lesson will be more engaging to student interest. One of the possibilities to have variation in the lesson program is to make use of international contacts. Not only with the foreign languages but also with other subjects.  Internationalisation can play a stimulating role in the educational process.

Aims of internationalization/Global Learning in education

  1. Global awareness: Increasingly the world is seen as a unity. Internationalisation promotes the fact that we are global citizens.
  2. Cultural awareness: Internationalisation makes it possible to get to know other cultures. This provides developing insight and respect for these cultures. Internationalisation also extends the consciousness of one’s own culture.
  3. Improve communicative skills: Internationalisation offers the students the possibility to actively use the foreign languages and in this way make them functional.
  4. Use ICT: Information and Communication Technology
  5. Improve social skills: During the exchanges students will stay in different surroundings. Internationalisation stimulates pupils to adjust to different surroundings and to be able to work together.
  6. Improve study skills: As part of educational reform students not only have to have a lot of knowledge and insight, they also have to develop skills in various fields. Internationalization improves the integration of skills that the pupils have learned and gives them the opportunity to develop them further.
  7. Foreign literature: The education of foreign literature will broaden and connect the boundaries of national literature history. Internationalisation offers opportunities to realize this broadening at schools.
  8. Subject knowledge: The international dimension in every field keeps getting more important. Internationalisation widens the opportunities to give meaning to subject based problems/assignments.
